The Beginning of Oakmont Boys Soccer - Fall of 1961

In the fall of 1961, Oakmont's second year in existence, the school introduced a new sport... soccer. The first year was a success on the field as the team went 4-3-1, playing the likes of Littleton, Acton-Boxboro, Mahar, and Narragansett. The team was coached by Richard Nyman. Although the program had its early successes, the boys program would be dropped after the 1962-1963 season. Dropping the soccer program would lead the way for Oakmont to start its football program.

Oakmont Youth Soccer is Founded 1976

Charles Jepson, Richard Nyman, Jeff Lawrence, and Marty Aristegui came together to help start Oakmont youth soccer.  Richard Nyman originally coached Oakmont Soccer from 1961 to 1963. At this time he was also coaching Groton Dunstable.  The founding of Oakmont Youth Soccer would lay a foundation for bringing soccer back to Oakmont. There was now a generation of kids from Ashburnham and Westminster who were playing soccer, but when they got to Oakmont there was no chance to play.

The Return of Oakmont Boys Soccer - Club Soccer 1983-1986

Jeff Lawrence, having been a part of the group who helped found youth soccer, would bring soccer back to Oakmont as a club sport in the fall of 1983. This was the first time soccer had been back since the fall of 1962. The original club team did not have jerseys and would play in pinnies. Their playing field was in the front of the school (currently the staff parking lot). There was also some interest shown by the girls at Oakmont to play soccer. They would occasionally practice with the club soccer team.

The boys team would have no home field, playing roughly eight games a year all on the road. They scrimmaged the likes of Cushing Academy, the Winchendon School, Fitchburg, Quabbin and Groton-Dunstable.  You would find the soccer team under clubs in the yearbook and not under the sports section.

Boys Junior Varsity Soccer -1987-1989

In the fall of 1987 Oakmont Soccer went from a club team to a Junior Varsity team. These three seasons would lay the foundation for the establishment of a Boys Varsity Soccer Team. In 1989 the boys team would play a combination of Junior Varsity and Varsity opponents throughout the year and finished the season 11-3. This season would be their last season strictly as a Junior Varsity team.

Boys Varsity Soccer Returns - 1990

A long journey back to becoming a varsity sport became a reality in the fall of 1990. The group of seniors, Lincoln Stiles, Tim Roy, Scott Lawrence, John Hultgren, Gene Chaisson, Joe Lambert, and Gary Bechtoldt had been part of a group that had seen soccer grow in the community from youth soccer to club to JV and now finally a varsity team. Oakmont would be competitive in its first year despite playing more established soccer programs.

It would not take long for the boys soccer program to become a top team in the area. In only its third year as a varsity program, the boys would go on to finish with a 11-3-2 record and qualify for Districts for the first time in school history (1992). That historical season would be followed up by another successful year in 1993 going 11-5-2 and making the District Finals. The fall of 1994 would be another successful year for the the boys team as they would again qualify for Districts.

Oakmont Welcomes Girls Soccer - Junior Varsity - 1993

Now it was the girls turn to start up a program laying the foundation for future classes to participate in Oakmont Girls Soccer. The program would start off as a Junior Varsity team for four seasons. They were coached by Stephanie Frend, a physical education teacher at Oakmont.

Girls Soccer Becomes Varsity - 1997

Stephanie Frend would lead the girls team into a varsity program in 1997. The Girls Varsity Team would be competitive in their first several seasons of varsity soccer. They would improve their record each year, going from 2-13 in 1997 to 7-11-1 in their fourth season as a varsity team (2000).

Successes On The Field For Boys Soccer - 2000-2009

Boys Soccer would qualify for Districts in 2002 for the first time since the mid 1990s. In the yearbook summary, coach Lincoln Stiles was quoted as saying, "It was an outstanding season, which one hopes will begin a perennial winning soccer program here at Oakmont." This hope would come to fruition over the next several years. From 2002 to 2009 the Boys Varsity Team would qualify for the Districts every year except 2004, where they missed qualifying by one win.

The boys team would reach two District semi-finals (2006, 2009) during that time. They would end the decade by becoming League Champions for first time in school history (2009). The 2009 season got off to a tough start going 0-2-2, but the boys team would then go on a 13 game winning streak.

Successes On The Field For Girls Soccer - 2000-2009

The early 2000s would be a successful and historic time for Girls Soccer. The 2001 Girls Varsity Team would qualify for Districts for the first time in school history. They would follow up that accomplishment by qualifying again in 2002. In 2005 the girls team would go on to have one of its most successful seasons going 16-0-2 and qualifying for Districts.

The girls would finish the decade strong, qualifying for Districts for the 2008 and 2009 seasons, winning the league in 2009 (13-2-4). This run of success would lay the foundation for a successful run of district teams for the Lady Spartans.

Girls Soccer - 2010 - Present

The Girls Varsity Team would continue their run of qualifying for Districts for the eighth year in a row in 2015, a streak that started in 2008. They would also go on to win the league four times, 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2015.

Boys Soccer - 2010 - Present

The Boys Varsity Team, after winning the league in 2009, would go on a rebuild. They would come close to qualifying for Districts in 2013 going 7-8-1. In 2014 the boys team would go 9-3-4 in the regular season and then go on an amazing run in the Districts. They would go on to win the first Boys Soccer District Championship. They would win the quarter's, semi-finals, and finals in shootout fashion.
